Believing that the ultimate value of poetry lies in facilitating man's search for meaning, award-winning author and poet Maria Victoria A. Grageda-Smith strives to write poetry that is not only accessible to the greater reading masses of everyday people but also suggests a glimmer of hope even in the most deplorable human conditions. This is the driving force and paramount voice in "Warrior Heart, Pilgrim Soul An Immigrant's Journey," her first book of poems.

"Who am I as a writer?" Ms. Grageda-Smith asks in the Preface to the First Edition of this book. In attempting an answer, she discovers that, like her beloved native country and people, she is, as her poem, "A Letter to My Mother" describes, "...always seemingly caught / between worlds--neither here nor / there, neither this nor that, eluding / tidy description, belonging nowhere…." This collection chronicles the inherently conflicted yet ultimately rich and textured journey of an immigrant woman compelled to achieve a radical redefinition of individual and national identity against a backdrop of life-changing circumstances and parallel historical developments in the United States and the world.

Here are what critics say about "Warrior Heart, Pilgrim Soul An Immigrant's Journey

"A cohesive poetry collection that…. boldly address(es) the beauty and ugliness of life.... in grand sweeping language…. (R)eaders will delight in…. original perspectives on well-worn tropes…. A forceful poetic expression of art and the self." --Kirkus Reviews

"....excellent writing.... elegant, meaningful and powerful... descriptions and images are exquisite... (H)er voice is intelligent but does not overpower.... I like the way (she) gives us something to think about and teach us awareness .... (of) love and appreciation for life.... (G)ood universal poetry (that) shows (her) passion for all mankind.... compassion for all who suffer and (her desire) to make the world a better place. But even in this sadness (she doesn't) bring us down." --Pat Underwood, multi-awarded poet and author of the poetry collection, "Gatherings"

Heartfelt thanks for the beautiful collection of poems. My favorite one is "A love Song for my Husband"- moving and very passionate portrayal of love between husband and wife- so dear that I recited this poem in lieu of eulogy for my late husband- everyone was moved and touched by the poetic way that Victoria wrote this poem.
Truly inspiring for all immigrants is her poem "Diaspora of Luzviminda"s children"-personally felt the travails of how one's job had to switch when you leave the native land..."a doctor turned medical clerk"...the challenges never cease as we live.

Maria Victoria Grageda-Smith you have the gift of words turned in poetry and short novels- looking forward to read your next collection.

An inspiring collection of poems! Offers a restful respite to the soul especially when read in bits and pieces...Highly recommended!
Poignant, passionate and pure, Ms. Grageda-Smith's book is an anthology of feelings. Upon reading her book, one realizes we all share this journey, whether immigrant or not. You will "find" yourself in her words.
What a great read! I was captivated within the first pages. I felt like I had walked in those shoes a time or two in my short life ;)
I seldom read books nowadays but this book caught my eye and attention. The first few pages were riveting which compelled me to read on until the end. Beautifully crafted poetry, aptly and wonderfully describing a journey every immigrant can surely relate to. I simply love it!
Warrior Heart, Pilgrim soul by Maria Victoria Grageda-
Smith's
I loved this collection. Anyone who has ever been an immigrant or an outsider will identify with these poems.. Anyone who has never experienced being left outside should read them and learn what that's like. Some poems like "Valentine's Dance of the Mail-Order Bride" are heartrending. Others like "Diaspora of Luzminda's Children" are angry.others sing of hope and family and children and love. There's something for everyone here. READ IT.
..... compelling anthology of poems that is highly recommended for first generation immigrants to the US like me! I can so totally relate and appreciate Maria Victoria Smith's poems! I've tagged my favorites and... I read them again! It is so gracious of the author to so openly share her thoughts including her heartaches/conflicts. But they're not all serious/solemn poems; there are funny/entertaining ones as well - with a twist! ) ... Looking forward to MVS's next book!
This collection of masterful poetry provides snap shots of the triumphs, defeat, perseverance and reinvention of the human spirit. Although, it is primarily seen through the lens of an immigrant's journey towards acceptance and validation, it is as relatable to any life situation we find ourselves into regardless of place of origin.

This book of poems brings to fore the author's intimate grasp and in-depth approach of her subjects to advance her themes within the reader's reach. Its rhythm reaches a crescendo that mesmerizes the reader to want for more up until a satisfying finish. It is searing in its honesty and uplifting in its sincerity. This collection not only delves into the personal (Eve's Rhythm) or a paean to nature (These are the Rains) that could also be taken as metaphors, but it also serves as a social commentary (Diaspora of Luzviminda's Children) and a political discourse (Pilgrim II).

The vivid imagery of Luzviminda compels the reader to self examine its pre-conceived notions of the immigrant experience in this country. Make no mistake, success stories abound such as the author's own accomplishments but the stark reality that this piece succinctly describes is everywhere. It personifies the immigrant Diasporas.

"Breakthrough" is an angst-ridden piece that epitomizes the daily struggle that we face in life. It reads like a mantra that keeps the reader on an even keel.
One other poem that strikes the heart is Purity of Nothingness. It is such a powerful title with such profoundness that challenges the reader to take stock and acknowledge that we are just a speck in this vast universe. The imprint that we leave behind lives only for as long as it is remembered. No monuments needed.

Fittingly, the last two lines of the poem, "The Writer, Playing God", says it all
Truly in the beginning
was the word
In these lines, the author recognizes the power of words but, ultimately, it is the writer that yields the force to move us with its meaning.
